Why Local Service Ads by Google Work for Local Service Businesses

How Google Local Services Ads work for HVAC, electrical and generator contractors in 2026, from the Google Verified badge and pay-per-lead billing to ranking and the move into Google Ads.

Quick Answer

Google Local Services Ads work for HVAC, electrical and generator contractors because they sit at the very top of Google search, show a Google Verified badge, and charge only for real leads: answered calls, messages and booking requests, not clicks. Placement is decided by your bid, your reviews and how fast you respond. Since August 2026, Google has been moving them into Google Ads as pay-per-lead Performance Max campaigns.

Homeowner on the phone looking for a local HVAC, electrical or generator contractor

A homeowner whose AC quits on a July afternoon, whose breaker keeps tripping, or who just sat through a two-day outage without a standby generator is not browsing. They want a company that can come out, and they pick from the first few names Google shows them. Google Local Services Ads put your company in that spot and charge you only when someone actually reaches out.

What are Google Local Services Ads?

Local Services Ads (LSAs) are Google’s pay-per-lead ads for service businesses. They appear at the very top of Google search results, above the regular text ads and the map pack, and they also show on Google Maps. Instead of ad copy, each one shows your company name, your star rating and review count, your hours, your service area and a Google Verified badge.

You don’t pick keywords. Google matches your ad to searches for the services you choose, such as “AC repair near me”, “electrician near me” or “whole home generator installation”, within the service area you set.

Why Local Services Ads work for HVAC, electrical and generator contractors

You pay for leads, not clicks

With regular Google Ads you pay every time someone clicks, whether they call or not. With LSAs, Google charges for a lead when you answer a customer’s call or call them back and talk, when they message you, or when they send a booking request. A missed call during your business hours counts only if the caller stays on the line for more than 20 seconds. Follow-up calls with the same customer within 15 days are not charged again.

For an HVAC company paying for clicks from people who are “just looking”, that difference adds up fast.

The Google Verified badge builds trust before the first ring

Since October 20, 2025, every LSA business that passes Google’s screening shows a single Google Verified badge. It replaced the old Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified by Google badges. Depending on your category and location, screening can include background checks, business registration, insurance and license checks, and minimum review requirements.

A homeowner deciding who to let into their attic or electrical panel cares about that check mark. Note that the money-back guarantee that came with Google Guaranteed has been discontinued, so don’t promise it in your ads or on calls.

The leads are local, specific and ready to book

Google only shows your ad to people searching for a service you offer, in the area you serve. That filters out most of the noise:

  • HVAC: someone searching “AC not cooling” or “furnace repair” in your zip codes, usually with a broken system right now.
  • Electrical: a homeowner searching for a panel upgrade, an EV charger install or “breaker keeps tripping”, often after another electrician didn’t call back.
  • Generator dealers: a homeowner pricing a standby generator after the last outage, which is a high-ticket job that usually starts with an estimate.

The competition is smaller and local

Anyone with a credit card can run Google Ads. To run LSAs, a business has to pass Google’s screening, so you are only competing with verified companies that serve the same area and offer the same service.

How Google decides who shows up first

LSAs are ranked in an auction that weighs your bid together with how likely your ad is to produce a lead. Google looks at:

  • Your bid. The most you are willing to pay for a lead. Google recommends the Maximize Leads bidding mode, and says providers with the same quality and budget who use it typically get more leads.
  • Your profile quality. Your rating, how many reviews you have, your average response time and the quality of your photos. Higher-quality profiles can rank higher and pay less per lead.
  • Your responsiveness. Missed calls and slow replies hurt your ranking. Turning on message and booking leads helps you capture leads at night and on weekends.

In practice, the contractors who win LSAs answer the phone, reply to messages within minutes, and ask every happy customer for a Google review. Our reputation management work exists for exactly this reason.

What happens to bad leads?

Google screens leads automatically. Leads it judges invalid or low quality are not charged, and charged leads are re-checked over time and credited back automatically if they turn out to be low quality (U.S. and Canada). You can still dispute a lead you believe is invalid.

Two rules catch contractors out. Google no longer credits leads for job types you don’t service or areas you don’t serve, so keep both settings accurate. A generator dealer who leaves every electrical job type switched on will pay for calls about light fixtures. Leads are also still charged when a customer cancels, only wanted advice, or never answers your call back.

The 2026 change: Local Services Ads are moving into Google Ads

In August 2026, Google began moving Local Services Ads into Google Ads as Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals. The first wave covers U.S. home service categories including HVAC and electrical, with more categories and service-area businesses following later in 2026 and into 2027.

What stays the same:

  • You still pay per lead, not per click.
  • Your ads still show at the top of Google Search and on Maps, without keywords.
  • Your verified status carries over automatically.

What changes:

  • You manage the campaign inside Google Ads instead of a separate LSA dashboard.
  • Manual bidding is being retired, and weekly budgets become daily budgets.
  • Your old LSA performance reports do not move to Google Ads, so download your history before you migrate.
  • Business details sync from your Google Business Profile, so make sure it is accurate.

How to get started

  1. Get your Google Business Profile right. Make sure your name, address, phone number, hours and service area are accurate and match your website, and keep earning reviews.
  2. Check your licenses and insurance. Have your license numbers and certificate of insurance ready for screening, along with details for any background checks your category requires.
  3. Choose your job types and service area carefully. Only switch on the work you actually want, in the areas you actually serve. Those leads are not credited back.
  4. Set a realistic budget and use Maximize Leads. Start with a budget you can sustain for a few months so Google has room to learn.
  5. Answer every lead fast and track the outcome. Mark leads as booked or not, follow up on every message, and compare what LSAs cost per booked job with your other channels.

Local Services Ads or pay-per-click?

They do different jobs. LSAs win high-intent “I need someone now” searches at a predictable cost per lead. Pay-per-click ads give you more control over messages, landing pages and offers, such as a maintenance plan promotion. Most HVAC, electrical and generator companies get the best results running both, with LSAs as the base.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do Google Local Services Ads cost for HVAC and electrical contractors?

You set a budget and a bid, and you pay per lead rather than per click. What a lead costs depends on your trade, your market and your competition. ServiceHawk's Market Takeover System budgets $3,000–$6,000 a month in Local Services Ads spend for most contractors.

Do I get charged for spam calls or wrong numbers?

Google screens leads when they come in and does not charge for ones it judges invalid. It also re-checks charged leads and credits low-quality ones back automatically in the U.S. and Canada. You can still dispute a lead you believe is invalid. Leads for job types or areas you don't serve are no longer credited, so keep those settings accurate.

What happened to the Google Guaranteed badge?

On October 20, 2025, Google replaced the Google Guaranteed, Google Screened and License Verified by Google badges with a single Google Verified badge, and discontinued the money-back guarantee that came with Google Guaranteed. Businesses that pass Google's screening display the new badge automatically.

Are Local Services Ads moving into Google Ads?

Yes. Starting in August 2026, Google began moving Local Services Ads for U.S. home service categories such as HVAC and electrical into Google Ads as Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals. Pay-per-lead billing, placement and your verified status stay the same. Manual bidding is being retired and weekly budgets become daily budgets.

How do I rank higher in Local Services Ads?

Answer every call and message quickly, keep earning recent 5-star reviews, add good photos to your profile, turn on message and booking leads, and use the Maximize Leads bidding mode. Google ranks ads in an auction that weighs your bid together with your profile quality and how responsive you are.
